Honoring Restored Souls Foundation & Its Inspiring Work with Foster Families

May 15, 2025 by Drew Smith
Drew Smith, Director of Communications for Copiers Plus, presents Melissa and Mark Matthews with the Restored Souls Foundation a big check outside of their mobile salon honoring their selection as a 40 Years of Caring Campaign winner.

As we celebrate 40 years of service this November, Copiers Plus—together with Kyocera—is donating $500 each to 40 deserving organizations through our 40 Years of Caring campaign. One of these incredible recipients is Restored Souls Foundation, a Wilmington-based non-profit dedicated to supporting foster families and individuals with disabilities across North Carolina.

A Lifeline for Vulnerable Families

Restored Souls Foundation offers more than programs—it provides hope for foster families and caregivers of children with special needs. Their programs provide free camps, community activities, and essential services designed to bring joy and stability to families who are often overwhelmed by the demands of caregiving.

According to Melissa Matthews, Executive Director of Restored Souls, the organization’s approach is “beautifully simple yet profoundly effective.” It focuses on three main pillars:

  1. Respite that Restores: Providing getaways for exhausted parents that allow them to rest and reconnect with one another.
  1. Experiences that Unite: Community events—from fishing trips to roller skating parties—that create spaces for vulnerable children to feel normal and for families to build strong, deep connections.
  1. Practical Support that Dignifies: Bringing essential services directly to those who need them through innovative concepts like their mobile haircut studio.

These unique initiatives help ensure that families don’t just survive, but thrive. Restored Souls is also the only organization in the country that offers all of its programs free of charge to foster families and has the only mobile hair salon for disabled individuals in the state!

A Heartfelt Nomination

“Every child deserves to have moments of joy, especially when their families are falling apart around them,” Matthews shared. Her personal belief in the organization’s mission is a driving force behind Restored Souls, and she’s experienced countless examples of their inspiring work.

She noted one story that was particularly powerful. Last Christmas, Restored Souls sent a foster family on Christmas vacation. Their foster baby had been diagnosed with a terminal illness, and this trip became an irreplaceable opportunity to create lasting memories during his final holiday.

Since 2020, Restored Souls has served more than 400 children and their families. But these numbers only tell part of the story, Matthews reminds us:

“Behind each statistic stands a family finding the strength to keep going. The real impact? Foster homes that stay open. Families that don't quit. Children who experience stability instead of disruption."

The Impact of $500

The $500 donation to Restored Souls will allow at least 60 children—many who’ve never seen the ocean—to participate in an upcoming surf camp. The event is more than a day at the beach. It’s about giving families hope and children confidence, joy, and connection.

“We're not just another nonprofit,” Matthews said. “We're a lifeline for parents who've opened their hearts and homes to children who needed them most and now need someone to lean on themselves. Thanks to businesses like [Copiers Plus], together we can make a lasting impact in the lives of vulnerable children and their families."
