Bladen County Public Library: A Cornerstone of Community Connection

April 29, 2025 by Drew Smith
Drew Smith, Director of Communications for Copiers Plus, presents Sheila Nance, Library Director for the Bladen County Public Library, with the honorary “big check” in honor of the Library being selected as a winning organization in the 40 Years of Caring Campaign.

Bladen County Public Library is more than just a place to check out books—it's a vital hub for learning, creativity, and connection. With branches in Elizabethtown, Clarkton, and Bladenboro, the library offers Bladen County residents free access to books, digital resources, and internet services, helping to bridge the gap for those without access to these tools at home.

Copiers Plus and Kyocera recognize the importance of this work and are thrilled for the opportunity to support the Bladen County Public Library through our 40 Years of Caring: Sharing the Love Across NC campaign!

Empowering Through Access, Education, and Imagination

From early literacy programs for children to skill-building workshops for adults, the library serves people of all ages. It’s also a welcoming gathering space, hosting community events, workshops, and clubs that foster learning and togetherness.

In the words of nominator and life-long visitor Sandy Bridgers, “It’s a wonderful place with great staff, and they deserve all the help they can get. Over the past couple of years, they’ve made incredible efforts to improve their building and create programs for the public to enjoy. They always strive to do even more for the community. If I could, I would give them a million dollars.”

Programs That Make a Difference

Bladen County Public Library offers a wide range of enriching events and activities, including:

  • Book clubs & early literacy programs
  • Continuing education & skill-building programs for adults
  • Free movie nights & game nights
  • Visits with Santa & Halloween celebrations
  • Sensory play equipment in their courtyard for young children

Their recent initiative—collecting Valentine’s cards and stuffed animals for nursing home residents—was a beautiful example of how the library sparks kindness and connection beyond its walls.

Upcoming Event: Summer Reading Program

Looking for a fun activity for the kids this summer? The library’s Summer Reading Program runs June 16–July 17 for ages 0–12. Parents can sign up by calling or visiting the library in person. It’s a fantastic way to keep kids engaged and inspired over the summer months!

How a $500 Donation Will Help

The library uses donations to fund a number of things, including:

  • Purchasing additional materials to expand programs
  • Refreshing their courtyard space with new plants, fresh paint, and outdoor furniture
  • Continuing to build on recent upgrades to create a more vibrant and welcoming environment for families

According to Bladen County Public Library’s Director, Sheila Nance, the $500 they’ll receive through our 40 Years of Caring campaign has an extra special purpose:

“We are humbled and thrilled to have been nominated and selected for this generous award. Our staff is passionate about sharing our love of reading with patrons of all ages, and we look forward to adding to our children’s book collection with this thoughtful donation.”

Every dollar helps create opportunities for learning, connection, and joy in the community.

How You Can Support

The best way to support the library, says Nance, is to take advantage of their services. You might check out a book, use the computers, attend a program, or simply settle into a quiet corner to read, study, or get work done.

Want to get more involved?

  • Volunteer – Help with events or ongoing programs
  • Join Friends of the Library – This active group supports all three branches with fundraising and events

Whether you attend a program, donate your time, or contribute financially, your support makes a difference. Together, we can help Bladen County Public Library keep making magic happen—one page, one program, and one person at a time.
