Vigilant Hope: Building Bridges & Changing Lives in Wilmington

July 17, 2025 by Drew Smith
Drew Smith, Communications Director for Copiers Plus, awards a $500 check to Vigilant Hope’s Executive Director, Laura Bullock, in celebration of the organization being chosen as one of 40 winners in North Carolina through their 40 Years of Caring Campaign.

In Wilmington, NC, Vigilant Hope is reimagining how communities respond to poverty—through compassion, connection, and meaningful action. This faith-rooted nonprofit builds bridges between underserved neighbors and those looking to serve, especially within the faith community.

As we approach our 40th anniversary, Copiers Plus, in collaboration with Kyocera, is celebrating organizations like Vigilant Hope through our 40 Years of Caring: Sharing the Love Across NC initiative. The campaign’s honorees demonstrate the power of caring through their heartfelt missions, and we’re honored to give back to the people and organizations that are uplifting North Carolina communities.

Programs Rooted in Dignity and Real Relationships

Vigilant Hope serves neglected communities by listening to and learning from people with lived experience in poverty, and building relationships rooted in dignity and respect. Fostering understanding through education, collaboration, and innovation creates opportunities for people from all walks of life to help improve the Cape Fear region.

Their initiatives include a mobile shower trailer, community book club, workshops, speaking engagements, community breakfasts, and potluck dinners, as well as more comprehensive programs like their Leadership Pipeline, Urban Intensive, and Poverty Simulation.

  • Leadership Pipeline—Provides mentorship, job training, and housing support for individuals at risk of poverty or homelessness.
  • Urban Intensive—A four-week journey exploring how Scripture defines poverty and guiding participants to align their passions with real community needs.
  • Poverty Simulation—A weekend immersion helping participants understand the daily realities and complexities of poverty.

They also operate Vigilant Hope Roasting, a community coffee shop that not only helps fund their programs but also creates a welcoming space for fellowship and connection.

These programs offer more than services—they create spaces for meaningful relationships and shared humanity.

Impact By the Numbers

In 2024, Vigilant Hope’s programs reached hundreds across Wilmington. Here’s a glimpse at their impact:

  • Provided warm showers and hygiene items at up to 11 sites across Wilmington six days a week
  • Served over 10,000 meals at community gatherings, fostering countless relationships
  • Mobilized nearly 5,000 hours of volunteer support
  • Reached 978 people through their poverty education initiatives
  • Partnered with more than 30 churches to amplify collective impact

These efforts reflect Vigilant Hope’s deep commitment to meeting practical needs while cultivating lasting community transformation.

A Community Built on Friendship

One of the most powerful aspects of Vigilant Hope’s work is the relationships it fosters. Jamie Craig, who nominated Vigilant Hope for our 40 Years of Caring campaign, has served as a volunteer and member of their Board of Directors for seven years. Throughout her years of service, she’s seen the difference Vigilant Hope’s approach makes and has personally developed deep, life-changing friendships with people she might otherwise never meet.

She recalls one story of friendship born out of the organization’s community breakfasts: “From the outside, Tone and I were nothing alike,” Craig shared, “…but through Vigilant Hope, we found more commonality and shared spirit than I've felt with even some of my closest friends.”

Their bond—cultivated through shared meals, mutual encouragement, and service—demonstrates the true power of Vigilant Hope's mission: to unite people across boundaries and build one another up. “That’s what Vigilant Hope does—it provides opportunities and spaces for people to realize each other’s humanity.”
