Honoring Military Missions in Action’s Work to Answer the Call for NC’s Armed Forces

July 1, 2025 by Drew Smith
Nora Sherwood, Finance Manager of Military Missions in Action, is presented a big check from Drew Smith, Director of Communications with Copiers Plus, honoring the organization as a winner in the 40 Years of Caring campaign.

As part of our 40 Years of Caring campaign, Copiers Plus is proud to recognize Military Missions in Action (MMIA)—a North Carolina nonprofit dedicated to supporting veterans, active-duty service members, and their families. Located in Fuquay-Varina, MMIA exemplifies what it means to serve with heart, helping an average of 4,500 veterans each year through hands-on programs that restore dignity, independence, and hope.

Their Mission & Impact

Founded in 2008 by Mike Dorman, MMIA exists to meet urgent and ongoing needs in the veteran community. Their four core programs touch nearly every aspect of life:

  • Operation Building Hope: Builds wheelchair ramps and completes home modifications for accessibility.
  • Homes for Healing: One-of-a-kind program that furnishes homes for formerly homeless veterans.
  • Fill the Footlocker: Sends care packages to deployed troops.
  • Transportation Services: Provides rides for veterans to medical appointments.

These initiatives meet essential needs with speed and compassion—sometimes within minutes of a request. As one of the only nonprofits in the state offering same-day support, MMIA is a lifeline to many.

Transforming Lives, One Veteran at a Time

The impacts of Military Missions in Action’s services are deeply personal for many, including Illisha Lear, a veteran and single mother. Though self-reliant and used to pushing through hardship, Illisha found her transition to civilian life more difficult and isolating than she could have imagined.

“Trying to balance raising a family as a single mom while navigating the effects of my military service was not easy,” she explains. “There were days when I didn’t know how we would make it. I wanted my children to know compassion, gratitude, and grace. I needed a lifeline to make that possible.”

Illisha reached out to MMIA for help during this challenging time, and she credits the organization with helping her family thrive.

“Through MMIA’s Homes for Healing program, caring people like you provided my family with the essentials that turned our house into a home. New pillows and cozy blankets for bedtime, tableware so we could share family meals—small things that make a big difference. We went from merely surviving to truly thriving."

Stories like Illisha’s are a reminder of how Military Missions in Action transforms lives—not just through goods and services, but through hope.

How the $500 Donation Will Help

This fall, MMIA is running Operation Rescue Christmas, which will provide toys and gift cards to more than 200 veteran families during the holidays. This $500 donation from Copiers Plus, in partnership with Kyocera, will directly support five families, helping to bring joy, stability, and a sense of normalcy during the season.

Nora Sherwood, MMIA Finance Manager, expressed words of gratitude for the support: "Thank you so very much for choosing MMIA for your charitable gift! This gift will enable us to provide services to veterans right here in NC. From providing daily essentials and furnishings for formerly unhoused veterans to shipping care packages overseas, we are dedicated to meeting the needs of veterans in NC."
