Celebrating the Mission of Honor Flight of the Cape Fear Area

Drew Smith, Director of Communications for Copiers Plus (middle) and his daughter, Addison Smith, presented a ceremonial check for the 40 Years of Caring campaign to Patty Miljenovic, Flight leader (left), and Gail Mullins, Treasurer (right), for Honor Flight of the Cape Fear Area at their April board meeting.

One of the 40 organizations selected to receive $500 as part of our 40 Years of Caring: Sharing the Love Across NC initiative, Honor Flight of the Cape Fear Area (HFCFA) works tirelessly to ensure that our nation’s heroes receive the recognition they so deeply deserve. A volunteer-run 501(c)(3) non-profit located in Wilmington, NC, HFCFA provides World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans with all-expenses-paid trips to Washington, D.C. These powerful one-day journeys allow veterans to visit the memorials built in their honor, while also educating the public on the sacrifices of those who have served our country.

About Honor Flight of the Cape Fear Area

Since its founding in 2020, HFCFA has flown more than 200 veterans to the nation’s capital—and the mission continues to grow. The next Honor Flight is scheduled for April 26, 2025, and will be the organization’s largest yet, honoring 85 veterans aboard a specially chartered aircraft.

The organization’s programming extends far beyond the flight itself. Each Honor Flight includes “Operation Mail Call,” a moving moment in which veterans receive hundreds of heartfelt letters from grateful citizens. And when they return home, the community comes together in a jubilant Welcome Home Celebration at Wilmington International Airport—a moment of joy, pride, and deep appreciation.

As Honor Flight of the Cape Fear Area’s Founder and President, Ruth Smith has seen the impact of the organization’s work firsthand. She suggests that those effects are best felt by watching the veterans themselves. The organization's website photo and video gallery offers a glimpse into the powerful and emotional experiences shared on these flights.

How Will $500 Impact HFCFA?

The $500 donation Honor Flight of the Cape Fear Area will receive as one of our 40 Years of Caring campaign winners will directly support these life-changing trips. It helps cover key costs including leasing the aircraft, chartering buses in D.C., and feeding and clothing veterans for the day. Every dollar brings a veteran closer to this meaningful experience.
